  20. <p>     When Kevin Richardson, 16, was pronounced guilty of
  21. attempted murder and rape, his mother fainted. As Kharey Wise,
  22. 18, was being led out of the courtroom after being convicted
  23. of sexual abuse, riot and assault, he yelled at Assistant
  24. District Attorney Elizabeth Lederer, "You bitch! You'll pay for
  25. this!" Black spectators shouted, "White justice!"
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     So ended the second trial resulting from the vicious rape
  28. and nearly fatal beating of an investment banker in New York
  29. City's Central Park in 1989. Three juveniles were convicted of
  30. rape and assault last August. After the latest trial,
  31. Richardson faces a maximum sentence of 10 years. Wise, who was
  32. treated as an adult, could get up to 26. Their sentences will
  33. be pronounced on Jan. 9. A third trial, slated for next month,
  34. will determine the fate of the last alleged assailant.

  36. <p>     The attack, in which the white woman while jogging was
  37. assaulted by a gang of black and Hispanic teenagers, roiled the
  38. city's already tense race relations. Black supporters of the
  39. youths charged that the media had hypocritically focused on
  40. this case while ignoring countless aggressions against nonwhite
  41. women. But the jurors--four whites, four blacks, three
  42. Hispanics and one Asian--insisted that they quickly discarded
  43. race as a factor in their 12 days of deliberations.
